We’re delighted to highlight the work of our Manufacturing Champion for May - HYDRO Systems UK Limited.

@Jonathan Farnfield, General Manager Hydro Systems UK, describes a recent successful project:
‘In 2017, HYDRO saw the completion of the design, manufacture and installation of a new wing fixture for Airbus UK. The purpose of this very flexible design is the fixation for testing of new manufacturing methods for multiple wing and wing part variants in one single fixture. The fixture was required, in the first place, to take a wing section up to six meters with the ability to increase to ten meters in the future. Wing interfaces had to be fully reconfigurable so that varying geometries could be installed, i.e., an inboard section of wing or an outboard section.
The project was led by HYDRO UK but this was a true collaboration between our Castle Donington, Hamburg and Biberach offices, utilizing the in-house expertise of the previous Airbus business as well as the Automation team. The fixture’s automation can be found in a number of areas. The top beam motors act in concert to enable the top beam to move up and down but they can also act independently from one another to provide a sloped position. Not only this but a section of the fixture, known as “Rib X”, acts as a dummy rib when an inboard section is installed. This can move along, guide rails on the floor, and produce a range of angles for a rib to be installed, dependent on the type of wing chosen (A320, A350, etc.). One of the defining points of this fixture is the innovative six degree of freedom flag interface. This is a prototype tool for the installation of flags, the interface between fixture and wing geometry. The six degrees of freedom were a requirement set by Airbus to enable any and all location positions to be used across all wing geometries. This design, in conjunction with the multiple positions where the Intermediate Structure can be placed, was the definition of reconfigurable. As such, HYDRO now has a joint patent with Airbus that could see us using this tool across a range of other fixtures in the Airbus Group.’
